


ONTARIO GLOBAL TRADERS AWARDS 2001 - Awards Categories and Eligibilty WHO IS ELIGIBLE Small to medium-sized private sector for profit enterprises (SMEs) based in Ontario which meet all of the following 5 criteria are eligible for the Innovation, Market Expansion and Partnership awards: annual sales of less than $50 million a maximum of 200 employees in business in Ontario for at least three fiscal years currently exporting to one or more countries exports sales that are at least 15 percent of total sales AWARDS CATEGORIES Innovation Award The Innovation Award recognizes excellence in the application of existing or new technology in the development of new products or services, and/or improvements to existing products or services that have led to consistent growth in exports and job creation. Breakthrough achievements in research and development, technology and infrastructure as well as product and service development and design are the focus of this award. This category is sponsored by the Canadian Commercial Corporation. Market Expansion Award (Two awards: Product and Service) The Market Expansion Awards recognizes the pioneering spirit of Ontario SMEs which have successfully established themselves in a new export market(s) in addition to existing markets. There are two awards: one for exporters of products and one for exporters of services. A company must demonstrate a significant increase in export sales and job creation as a result of having entered this new market(s) and/or must have overcome difficult obstacles in order to establish themselves within the market. The Market Expansion: Service category is sponsored by Deloitte & Touche LLP. Partnership Award The Partnership Award is a shared award that recognizes successful strategic alliances between exporting Ontario-based SMEs and private or public sector partners that have led to new export opportunities or enhanced existing ones. Nominees must demonstrate how their alliance has produced results that are mutually beneficial and that have enhanced in a significant way the export success of the SME. The judges will be looking for unique alliances that are more than simply a buyer seller relationship. To be eligible, at least one of the partner nominees must meet the exporting SME criteria listed above. This category is sponsored by RBC Financial Group. INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORIES Leadership Award The Leadership Award recognizes individual men and women who are acknowledged by their peers for championing the cause of exporting in Ontario, in particular by SMEs. They have shown a commitment to mentoring other leaders and developing an export culture in Ontario through their involvement with industry- or trade-related organizations, networks, educational institutions and students, their community, etc. This category is sponsored by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. Student Achievement Award This award recognizes students who excel, seek opportunities and put into action what they have learned in the field of exporting and international trade. Students must demonstrate the degree to which their contribution has benefited Ontario's exporting community either through their studies or through business experience. This category is open to individuals (or groups) who are Ontario residents under the age of 30 years (i.e. born in 1972 or later), who were enrolled at an Ontario college or university for a minimum of 9 hours of classes per week in international business or other programs, and/or on a co-op placement, for at least one semester in 2001. HOW WINNERS ARE SELECTED Nominations are evaluated by regional panels for regional awards and a provincial panel for provincial awards. Panels are made up of executives from leading Ontario companies, representatives from academic institutions and members of community business organizations, such as chambers of commerce, boards of trade and economic development groups. |
